what happens when you bring together two percussionists who are well-established in the electronic music scene and commission them to produce four tracks exclusively with percussion instruments-with the only requirement being not to deliver any overtly thought-out nerd music? the answer has been provided by sven kacirek and thomas klein on this release.

the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.

after a spot of chronological chaos last time out, nado regain their numerical composure with a sumptuous four tracker from new york renaissance man quinn lamont luke (bing ji ling) loose and limber after a chakra aligning cover of loose ends for phantom island last summer, the paqua frontman brings his linen suit and boat shoes to the good ship nado, joining moonboots and boardman for a relaxed session of horizontal dancing. taking a pleasant vacation from his trademark blue eyed soul, qll packs up the mic and lets the music do the talking, treating us to a dreamy quartet of instrumental grooves.

a side track ‘’1840&#8242,’ (feat. contrapunct) is the result of taking a violin built by jean-baptiste vuillaume in the year 1840, played by our in-house virtuoso now known as contrapunct and making a sample kit / sound kit with it yes, this means all the sounds you hear on this song are sourced from an old and beautiful violin. using original recordings combined with different manipulation techniques, the trio deliver to the plate over 12 minutes of intensity. one can explain it like this perhaps……….. you are high in the blue sky walking a high wire over an ocean of beautiful coral reef, still maintaining balance, but looking down at the view beneath and thinking- “if i got to go- there cannot be much better ways!

floating astronomical objects and the void in between – jon hester enters the dystopian circle with four gravity manipulating techno tracks coming directly through the wormhole. jon hester got his start in the midwest us, living in chicago, minneapolis, and connecting with detroit. after years on the dance floor he took to the decks, going on to work in a record shop, host his own events, and hold residencies that developed his sound. music production and a move to berlin followed, but dancing and mixing are still the inspirations that drive him to create. his dj sets are built on physical rhythms and adventurous programming, effortlessly combining diverse varieties of techno and house. with an engaging presence and a knack for telling a story, he builds a unique connection with each audience, and works any room until it sweats.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

ep number four of this series of eight remastered tracks with remix-tributes to the techno legend christian morgenstern is here, and kicks off with d_funcs remix of steigreider on side a. creating a warm grayscale atmosphere, the track is carried by a heavy sub kick groove thats saturated with the modern industrial energy that proves kowalski’s skills as a techno craftsman. as a contrast, jeroen searchs remix of aces high on b1 is a more minimal interpretation, carried by a slowly developing beat and playing skillfully with the most recognisable elements of the original. the final track, a remastered version of morgensterns lydia to the edge of panic is a timeless classic, painting a morgenstern-typical distant and dream like landscape and opening up into a widescreen chord progression, with an epic build up.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

people must jam s ninth record is from one of our favourite djs and producers. a guy who has a ridiculously large back catalogue and in our opinion it is a crime that some of his records haven t received bigger recognition. a true master of house and hip hop music, kid sublime has been putting out amazing records since 2001. his own label dopeness galore literally does exactly what it says on the tin. even before we launched people must jam s label we wanted kid sublime to be a part of it. now finally we are stoked to present this ep... four serious cuts for four different vibed floors - look out! first up kid s homage to techno legend ben sims with bang like sims a driving deep techno groove. strong percussion, deep stabs and that unrelenting beat are going to ensure this one gets some love on the harder edged, heavier dance floors. we the people heads a little down the tribal route with some afro inspired percussion, haunting samples and that kalimba! dropping a really infectious riff before beautiful piano melodies drift in and out of the mix. wonderful stuff. the title track i like em dirty , we feel, is a lesson in proper deep house. classic sounding house beats, little guitar licks, deep stabs and the vocal sample combine for this perfect house cut. massive. the ep is rounded out with another cut in tribute to the legend that was kenny hawkes. another master of his craft - kenny sadly now passed on but his spirit is well and truly alive in this fitting tribute. one 4 kenny features strong percussion, low bass, deep stabs and slamming beats = cracking stuff

storming into our fifth release from the dirty shores of new jersey, green village is proud to present village elders 001, a compilation ep featuring new material from artists who have already flown the flag for gv. the a-side is held down by the plan b duo of dj spider and dakini9, purveyors of the metro area s dirtiest and deepest house sounds. spider gets toxic a second time,following his 2013 instruction drop with toxic trace 2, a thickly layered deep house cut whose seedy percussion underbelly contrasts vividly with the more traditional deep house pads that accompany it. dakini9 s lost paradise is dark and mysterious like its title, the hats, trumpets, and vocals emerging in tangled webs of dub effects, a strong follow-up to her dope ep for the label. disaroen, a duo from toronto, half of which previously appeared on gv, turns in the most barren of the four tracks, serious doorman, heads-down techno that crackles to life halfway in and an auspicious debut for a promising new group. last is nj heavyweight nicuri, a rising star whose ripples of time closes the ep in his signature searching, melodic style.

over the course of four albums, manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader matthew halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the uk music scene as one of it s brightest talents. his languid, soulful music has won friends from jamie cullum and gilles peterson to jazz fm and mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. his label gondwana records is home to gogo penguin and his own albums have found halsall exploring the modal jazz of john and alice coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s or most recently on fletcher moss park drawing on eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. his latest album when the world was one is something of a companion piece to fletcher moss park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in japan. beautifully recorded at hasall’s favourite studio, 80 hertz in manchester, and engineered by brendan williams and george atkins it features the recording debut of halsall’s large ensemble, the gondwana orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and eastern scales to create a global palate for halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

the russian artist mobile soul system brings his classy, elegant minimal deep house to red panda music, one of the new labels from barcelona, getting quite a lot of praise and attention. pure underground sound supported by laurent garnier, sidney charles, pawsa, hermanez and many others. four different cuts that can suit the mood of many different club situations along a sophisticated and cool house vibe.

another fine reissue of a chicago classic from jeff craven and his large music imprint focusing again on the dynamic artistic team of black ice productions. first released in 1992 on velvet city records, the black ice ep treads more into a deeper and jazzier vibes than their other outings at that time (such as the union camp release). a few listens and one can easily recognize the influence that all four tracks had on future labels and artists throughout the mid and late 1990 s. this is timeless, pioneering chicago deep house at its finest and a must have for all collectors.

hot on the heels of “the reason”, released earlier in april, mimi music continues to impress with the death no more ep from label head komplexx. he teams up with former booker of extrema and present-day photographer peter van hal. the original version of “death no more” defies genre boundaries with ease. fusing old school progressive stylings, well placed percussion, an epic choral vocal with a catchy main hook and a rubbery bass line, komplexx has unleashed a summer anthem for the discerning dance-floor worldwide. the remix comes from well respected german artist marcus sur. a producer in his own right, signed to noir music, trapez, highgrade, four:twenty records and many more, sur created a darker more hypnotic journey focusing on the percussive aspects of the original. and komplexx’s v.i.p. mixx heads off into housey techno waters from the start. deeper, more percussive and driving, the v.i.p. mixx keeps the central melody intact while creating a darker feel. this has mass crossover appeal written all over it.

goncalo salgado aka lake haze first came onto the scene in 2014, with a release on dj haus’s ­ unknown to the unknown imprint. since his impressive inception to the scene, lake haze’s sound has developed and evolved massively, so much so, that in 2015 he created an incredible offering for dutch label creme organisation, which featured a legowelt remix. the four track ep, features dark synthy productions on the a side, with more club friendly acid cuts on the flip. packaged in full sleeve artwork, limited press.

when heavyweights collide in any arena there’s always going to be fireworks, and the violent five ep sees two such goliaths, black sun empire and state of mind, go head-to-head across four dark-edged dancefloor killers.

matt bridgewater aka callahan first released on 4 seasons back in 2015 with ‘armshouse’ ep, since then he released an impressive offering on dext, featuring a hodge remix, as well as playing shows around the uk. the four track ep, features heavy breakdowns, percussion fuelled rhythms, as well as the club friendly ‘state of mind’ collaboration with uk legend roska. straight club fuelled, dark room business.

dog in the night staple robert crash gets back at it with a new ep of house madness! the italian producer once again shows us why hes the boss, clocking in with another four tracks of acid fueled beaters. off kilter beat tracks that are sure to get the tweakers in a frenzy, this is what house is and should be. recommended.

shlomo opens the ep with a deep and droning, yet uptempo track. ben gibson continues on the a-side with a synth and tom-driven track, in which the main synth really draws you into the track. takaaki itoh is put on the b1 spot and continues the deep vibe the artists set on the a-side, yet in a more minimalistic way. his track keeps on evolving and growing ever more, while the track in it s core does not change that much. overall severity closes the ep off with a moody banger. this dance floor oriented track focuses on percussive elements and the drums a lot. this track is one of the last ones made by the late max_m, who formed overall severity together with wrong asessment, which makes this ep a little bit more special. four different artists, but a great sounding ep with four tracks that compliment each other really well!
